Spay and neuter procedures are very helpful to prevent accidental litters that can otherwise lead to abandoned pets on the streets or overcrowded shelters. Although it helps to reduce unwanted populations, there are also many benefits associated with the surgeries. To learn more about these operations, call us at 519-653-1003.

What are the benefits of neutering my pet?

Neutering your pet has many benefits. The procedure, which prevents male animals from reproducing, can help your beloved pet live longer. It reduces or eliminates their risk for prostate and testicular cancer, as well as sexually transmitted diseases. The procedure will also help with undesirable or aggressive behaviours including roaming, mounting, and urine marking.

How would spaying my pet benefit them?

Spaying your pet can dramatically increase their lifespan as it can protect them against potentially deadly diseases, such as bacterial infections, reproductive tract diseases, and various types of cancer. It also prevents them from going into heat, which means avoiding the mess that often accompanies the heat cycle like pacing and crying.

When should I have my pet spayed or neutered?

The timing of the procedure between cats and dogs is different. Whereas female kittens can be fixed at any time, dogs should preferably wait until they are past 6 months of age. More specifically, small-breed dogs should be neutered at 6 months or spayed before their first heat, which is around 5-6 months. Larger breeds often get fixed at a later age between 9-15 months to allow proper bone growth and maturation. If your dog is, however, in heat, then we may postpone the procedure for a couple weeks after the cycle is over due to an increased complication associated with the surgery. Female kittens can enter their first heat cycle as early as 4 months, but due to their frequent heat cycles, it is advised to schedule the surgery before they reach 5 months of age.
