Parasite Control & Prevention

Protecting your pet against internal and external parasites.

No one likes to hear that their loving companion has parasites. Even more so, nobody wants to see parasites crawling in the stool. Understanding parasite control and prevention is important for any pet owner because parasites can cause serious health conditions. Parasites can live off your pet, with internal parasites feeding off your pet's nutrients and external ones feeding from the outside. If you notice any parasites, please call us for treatment at 519-653-1003!

What are signs that my pet has parasites?

During early stages of infection, it may be difficult to identify parasites, especially internally. Your pet should be administered preventative medication on a timely manner to keep them protected. Below are some common signs of parasitic infections:

  • Itching and scratching
  • Swollen belly
  • Dry, persistent cough
  • Bald patches or bumps on the skin
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Weight loss

How does parasite prevention work?

During your pet's annual health visit, our veterinary team will curate a parasite prevention plan to keep them safe. The dosage frequency is dependent on your pet's environmental situations and lifestyle habits. Based on your pet's specific case, we may either prescribe a monthly preventative dosage or reduce it to every couple month. Regardless, it is still recommended to continue the prescription even during the winter.

Can I get parasite control from a pet store?

Although you can purchase parasite control from a general pet store, over-the-counter products may not always be safe or effective. Some pets even develop a reaction. Therefore, it is recommended to discuss options with us first before you purchase any to prevent complications from arising.
